NEXT OF KIN

Surkin is well known by now as playing a major part in the new french wave of el-music, and he releases records on the other french label Institubes.

The featured track was first heard on the Justice mix posted here in January, it´s called NEXT OF KIN and it was one of my favorite tracks on the mix. I´ve been looking everywhere for it since, and it appears it will not be released until the 7th of April as part of the NEXT OF KIN EP. I only managed to get my hands on what sounds like a vinyl rip, but it should wet your panties, and if it does, make sure to buy the EP when it comes out in April.

Rubies is a Californian girl group, described by themselves as electrofolk. I don´t know about all that, but this first single off the album Explode From The Center, is really clean. It features Feist on vocal duties, and she does a bang up job (as always).

They are singned to House of Telle run by our very own (that is Norway) Mikael Telle. So pat yourself on the back if you come from the great land of the fjords.

IS BLOGGING AN ART FORM?

I promised myself I wasn´t going to do this, but I felt I had to when I came across this blog.

As we know there is a sea of mp3 blogs out there on the inter-web, and they all pretty much post the same Justice track or teenagers remix, something I´m guilty of myself from time to time. But at the same time I have a feeling that the established blogs like (example) Discobelle will post anything that hits their inbox as long as it´s a noisy fidget banger, or some dance fueled crunk/hyphy/hip-hop upchuck. Most established blogs do this so they can be the first to break out the new hipster/ club hit and keep their place in the blogging hall of fame.

I myself am pretty new at this, I didn´t discover mp3 blogs before the summer of 2006, through a discobelle mixin´it up by Klever (I think). And I was extremely happy when I did and spent the majority of my time downloading all the tracks I could get my cursor on. Not a lot has changed since then, I think I´m a little more selective though, as I have to be if I don´t want to spend money on an external hard drive (the one I have is already full of blog tracks, all 120 gigs of it, I had to delete the porn. It´s a question of prioritizing. Sometimes I regret it, but what can you do?)

When it was time for me to start my own blog, I followed the way that had been paved by thousands of other blogs and wrote a blurb about the song or songs and artist or band and linked it up to myspace and discogs. Which there is nothing wrong with, because it´s informative (which is good). I don´t even try to be funny (like many others) because I don´t really have a sense of humor. Anyways, I do my best.

Enter Hipster Runoff the first postmodern blog I have come across. It´s an mp3 blog about mp3 blogging. However, it´s wrong to say "enter" because they´ve been around for a while, they boast about being the first blog to blog about Justice in 1999, which probably isn´t true since Justice first came on the scene in 2004. Anyways, I urge everyone to take a peak since it´s spot on sometimes and you get the same tracks there you´ll get anywhere else (the post about steve aoki is especially engrossing).

ANOTHER SWEATER

Sterac Electronics is Steve Rachmand the Dutch techno producer and DJ who has been featured here before with his beautiul Moog On Acid.

When he operates as Sterac Electronics he´s less techno and more electro, and he does it as well, if not better then when he does techno (it´s more my cup of tea at least).

The 12" Another Sweater came out in 2003. The original is by Secret Cinema and Michel De Hey, but is easily forgotten, Steve´s remix is where it´s at.

DISCOPOLIS

This song is pretty old now, 2005 to be exact. And it was a pretty huge hit in the club circuit back then, and neither Kris Menace nor Lifelike have come close since, though their efforts have been stellar.

Discopolis is extremely infectious, the bassline and the synth create a crescendo that all club tracks should aspire to.

ME ARE THE WORLD!

Me Are The World has been featured in these pages before, then however as Jens. Me Are The World and Jens are, in fact, one and the same. He dabbles in many styles, and has struck gold with this short-but-sweet elctrohop banger. It features Kristin X Grue, who is day to day a student at the prestigious Teaterhögskolan in Stockholm and also can rap, as it turns out.

Montreal´s Cfcf is something of a wonder. He makes beautiful electronic music that screams WHY AM I SO THIRSTY!! and he has remixed The Teenagers like every other blog artist out there. Yet Cfcf´s remix stands out among the other innocuous efforts in that it has the best melody in any song I´ve heard, period. I might be overstating it, but there is no denying the infectiousness of cfcf´s el-piano.

His non-remixes also offer some great moments.

POLAR POP

Working Girl is a romantic comedy from 1988, directed by Mike Nichols who also did The Graduate (1967). The film (working girl) is a testament to the female of the 80´s, strong and independent, and Sigourney Weaver and Mellanie Griffith beautifully convey the heart ships of being a woman in a mans world (in the 80´s).

Kelly Polar is an American pop artist , and has nothing to do with WORKING GIRL. His album I NEED YOU TO HOLD ON WHILE THE SKYE IS FALLING is out now on itunes. So be sure to check it out.

I just bought this album by Swedish pop group Pacific!, and it´s some of the best music I´ve heard in a while. The track RUNAWAY TO ELSEWHERE is an instant classic in it´s catchy-ness and the rest of the songs hold the same standard.

VAMP

Outlander is a group from back in the rave days of the early 90´s. The group consisted of MAW man Loie Vega and Belgian producer Marcos Salon. Together as OUTLANDER they made a handful of tracks for legendary house lable R&S, the biggest hit was VAMP, which was released in 1991. I first heard the track on Justice´s Essentail Mix for BBC Radio 1 last year and fell in love with it instantly. The track (like many others) has a tendency to show up in Justice´s DJ sets, like the mix from Pink Pony and when they played Blå here in Oslo in February. It´s a crowdpleasing banger deluxe!

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM CHEVY CHASE #1

BREAKBOT IS THE NEW HOT

Breakbot is a Parisian DJ and producer who´s sound is quite extraordinary. It´s right up my ally these days, a hybrid of funk and house that possesses more of the good qualities of Daft Punk than any Justice or Digitalism that have been hailed as the hairs to the throne.

His Happy Rabit EP came out around this time last year, still I think 2008 will be Breakbot´s year.

Here is another fantastic video from Justice. It´s directed by So Me who also did the D.A.N.C.E. video and Kanye West´s Goodlife video. I´m not a fan of the song, but the video is amusing.

MIDNIGHT MIKE

Midnight Mike is a British chap that´s been on the scene for a while now. He´s the CEO of Flesh Records and has remixed Munk and Colder to name a few. The track featured here has the snappy title HOT IN THE KITCHEN and is taken from the 2005 EP BRING ME TO MY SENSES released on Gomma.
