The first track is a rework of James Horner´s beautiful and haunting theme for Oscar-winner A Beautiful Mind. And the second I don´t know, but DJ Mhedi used the same sample for his massive 2007 hit "Signatune".

I just discovered that my favorite dj team in the world did a Radio 1 Essential Mix back in 2006. The team in question is of course the two Scotsmen JG Twitch and JG Wilks who make up the super musical/art empire Optimo Espacio. They mix up the old and the new like few else do. So if you don´t already have their How To Kill The Dj vol 2 CD you should definitely do something about that.

O SUPERMAN

Laurie Anderson is an American experimental artist, initially trained as a sculptor she dabbled in a variety of different performance art activities in the 60´s and 70´s. Her claim to her 15 minutes came in 1981 when her single "O Superman" hit number 2 in UK charts. She is still active as a musician and artist.

In 2005 German minimal duo M.A.N.D.Y. did an unofficial remix that was released on white label (or actually with a cartoon on it that shows superman saving Mandy).

M.A.N.D.Y.´s version is a clubification of the original that focuses more on rhythm than the original.

KITSUNE TABLOID COURTECY OF DIGITALISM

I can´t say I´m a big fan of Germany´s Digitalism, but they have a good taste in music, even though the music they make is kind of noisy and a little passé. But the mix they did for French hipster label Kitsuné entitled "Tabloid" is a great funk-electro-rock oriented gem. And here it is free as a bird.

Out of Toronto, Canada comes another boy/girl electro pop duo under the descriptive name Electric Youth. The songs they have made are throwbacks to the 80´s with a cover of Italo Disco mistress Clio´s 1985 track "Faces". And the other track also lifts it´s melody from another 80´s track I can´t quite put my finger on. Anyways they are pretty wonderful and upbeat.

From the ‘Pass the Dust, I Think I’m Bowie’ album, which might just be the best name for a record ever. Originally released on Dangerhouse Records who released a whole lot of amazing late seventies LA punk singles (The Dils, Weirdos, X, The Eyes). Not extremely influential on our sound I guess, but boy do I love that stuff.
* Jobriath ‘World Without End’
Jobriath was set out to be the American answer to Bowie in the mid seventies… He only made two records of which only the first one actually is really good. His life and carreer is a pretty sad story if you get into it - there’s some stuff to be found on the internets I guess. Morrissey had a hand in a CD reissue a few years back.
* The Ghost ‘The Storm’
Amazing late sixties/early seventies UK psychedelic band - Wah Wah from Barcelona reissued their (only?) album last year… Definately one to look for.
* Gomorrha ‘Tittisch Child’
I hardly know anything about this band - I guess they’re German and made only one record in ‘72. This track is sick though…
* Grand Funk Railroad ‘Going For the Pastor’
I mentioned this track as the main inspiration for the break in ‘Heavy Metal Music Magazines’. The vocals are a little bit too much at times, but musically it’s great. Frank Zappa produced this.
* Left Banke ‘Men Are Building Sand’
Some higly Zombies inspired stuff here I guess… There’s a compilation album with all of their recordings between ‘66 and ‘69. Highly Recommended… Oh yes, Spinal Tap’s Michael McKean played with them at some point, haha.
* Astral Navigations ‘Someday’
Some more 70s British psychedelica.
* Chris Squire ‘You By My Side’
So many horrible Rick Wakeman records, and just one amazing Chris Squire solo album… It’s just unfair.

PASE ROCK DO OVER

"For those of you that don't know the Do-Over is the best party in Los Angeles and has been running for about 3 years. It's hosted by Chris Haycock, Jaime Strong from Stones Throw and the man the myth the legend Aloe Blacc. Aloe is the MC and they have a various who's who of DJ's unexpectedly stopping thru. This year alone Stretch Armstrong, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Eleven, Thee Mike B, Will.I.Am, Lloydski, Blu Jemz, DJ Spinna, 9th Wonder, DJ namedrop namedrop namedrop have all showed up and rocked. They never announce the line up, you just have to come and get down and jam. It's a real music loving crowd on some sweaty backyard barbeque and sangria steez. BEAUTIFUL. My plan was to play some soulful disco and house but when I arrived Damon Bell was kinda destroying the game on that tip and Chris asked me to "get it loose" around 7 pm. Arabian Prince from NWA (yeah that NWA) was playing after me, so I was kinda in "holy shit" mode and really geeking out on some nerdy hip hop shit (bu-bu-but wait it gets worse!) so I check out the scene to see what was mean and feel it out a little bit on what I should do. I think I made the right decision. ANYWAY if you're ever in LA in the summertime on a sunday afternoon make sure you stop by Crane's Tavern in Hollywood for the Do Over. go for the music, get drunk off the sangria and stay for the BBQ."

WEIRD TAPES

Weird Tapes hails from Philly and is somehow affiliated with indie pop rock band Hail Social.

The music is a pop/rock/house/disco hybrid that is very soothing and emotional, maybe not the club bangers (but who needs them?). Here for your listening and downloading pleasure I got the whole five track EP called "Get Religion" from last year.

The track "Party Trash" also samples which ever track Ice Cube sampled on "Today Was A Good Day". Nicely Done.

RA PODCAST 118 BY HEARTBREAK

Like much of the music that appears on their RA podcast, though, Hearbreak's album is unrelentingly sincere, full of the same sorts of emotions that any pop music tries to get across: Love, regret, why robots have feelings too. However you feel about the perceived cheesiness is your problem: These guys certainly don't have time for your issues with synthetic horns and less-than-perfect vocalists. Instead, they're moving on to showcase tracks from their solo projects on Dissident ("Lacrimal," "Tropical Warrior") or old school techno and house. As Muravchik writes in the answers below, this is one group that thinks "music has a strong impact on our society, and if we manage to encourage people to go deeper and try to understand the true power of music, then a lot of other positive things will ensue." Amen.

What have you been working on recently?

We've been working on our debut album, Lies, which is out on Lex Records on September 22. We've also been doing quite a few remixes and production for other acts, such as Neon Neon and Little Boots (and others which we can't talk about yet). We've also produced a cover version of David Bowie's "Loving the Alien," for the compilation Life Beyond Mars, released by !K7's sub-label Rapster Records.

Where and how was the mix recorded?

It was recorded at Fantasy Studios, our own production space. We mixed all tracks on vinyl, except for the movie soundtrack excerpts and the a cappellas from our upcoming album, which we edited in on Ableton.

Can you tell us a little about the idea behind the mix?

We wanted to show the different styles and genres that have influenced Heartbreak's sound, so we structured the mix in different sections, from classic Italo disco and hi-NRG, to a quick section on Detroit techno and old school Chicago house. We also aimed to take the listener on a journey through our world, of which late '70s and early '80s Italian horror films and John Carpenter's classic work are an important part. This reinforces the feeling of a narrative that is crucial to our understanding of music production and DJing.

You've said that the political significance of awakening the ignored voices of disco in the UK in 2008 is huge. Can you expand on that?

Well, from the political point of view, 2008 in the UK could hardly be more disappointing. We think music has a strong impact on our society, and if we manage to encourage people to go deeper and try to understand the true power of music, then a lot of other positive things will ensue. We believe disco has always suffered from prejudice, which is the consequence of it being the one music genre that was truly aiming to push a stronger sense of an integrated community.

The ethnic origin of the performers, the singer's accent, all of these things are what the critics of this music have always feared and rejected, in 1979 as much as 2008 (a recent review of our single described my Argentinean accent as "a fake French accent"—and barely mentioned anything about the MUSIC itself!) . To call disco music "cheesy" or "empty of meaning," is a tired fallacy that hides prejudice and a weak attempt to stop the best cultural developments in our world. Disco is the only music genre at this point in time that can effectively confront and remind people that to see a dead "foreign" body is as bad as seeing a "national" one.

How do you get from Sabbath to Moroder?

Think riff, think emotion, think energy. Think about the core of what makes music powerful, and you'll find what unites them: the shameless strive to reach this musical essence. Both Moroder and Sabbath are focusing on the very specificity of music that makes it a unique form of art. This is not the case many times, when artists need to justify their lack of musicality with, either rationalisation gone astray, or worse, a certain feel of "cool" which, really, only hides the hierarchical power structures that underlie what's worst in our world.
