SOMMER PÅ SVENSK

Photobucket

While I sit inside and read about christianity and various other religions, some are outside enjoying this exceptional weather we are having. This mix is for those people. Weather your sipping bayer or bbq´ing baby back ribs, this mix sits right with sun shine and all that goes with it.

It is beautifully mixed together with style and grace by Swedish pop master Jens Lekman. A highlight is halfway through where we get some comic relief with some Swedish guy talking on the phone with Alicia Keys. Funny stuff...

SELF-TITLED

Photobucket

Another great mix from one half of Flagrant Fowl, Pocketknife.

Here is what he had to say:

"The good folks over at self-titled Magazine invited Cousin Cole and I to DJ at their next Oscillations party which happens to be next Thursday over at Studio B. They wanted to showcase some of our upcoming releases too, so I put together a mix of old and new Flagrant Fowl tracks with some current non-Flagrant jams that weaves it all together like a Cosby sweater. We’re excited for you to hear our new remixes, plus recent additons to the Flagrant Fowl family, Youth and Three Card Monte. Check it out!"

BREAD

Photobucket

I´m a strange music person. I´ve sometimes heard of the most obscure and elusive krautdiscorock, and never heard of the huge pop hits of our time. One of these is Bread´s 1972 love song Everything I Own. Well it´s not that I ever heard it, it rang the proverbial bell, but it never registered. Now it has, and I want to share its beauty with you beautiful people.

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST

I´ve been spending a lot of time on Spotify lately, discovering new music and making my own little mixtapes. So this is a playlist I made that is heavy on Rockabilly type stuff, and some obscure discodance thrown in there. Please enjoy.

BACK IN THE DAY

Photobucket

I find myself searching and searching to find music that can grace these pages, but it´s hard. Nothing sits right with me anymore it seems. Nothing hits me in the head and heart with a sledgehammer and demands repeat listens. So I find myself going back (as I often do) to 1999:

Before Pnau became the generic blog pop they are today, they made an album of beautiful and sensual french touch (the old one) house called Sambanova. It features no vocals, just great beats from the last golden age in house, things people who grew up with Daft Punk will appreciate. So here are two tracks from the above mentioned album, that should funk you right on up on this Saturday evening.

STRANGER IN THE CITY

Photobucket

I have had a blog break now for a while, because my macbook has been on the friz. It`s not well yet, so I`m blogging from my shitty pc that turns itself off without warning.

Anyways I`ve been listening to this great song from singer/songwriter John Miles for some time now. Many of you are probably familiar with it because edit master Pilooski did an edit of it a few years ago. I enjoy the original version more though, so here it is in all its 1976 glory.

FIRE PILS OG EN PIZZA

My good friend Me Are The World made this edit of the classic 80`s Norwegian pop hit by Åge Aleksandersen. I must admit that I had a hand in the songs conception, I`m the father and Me Are The World is the mother who bore it in his womb for 9 moths(or two weeks in this case).

WE ARE THE ARM

Photobucket

I just got this synth funk explosion in the mail. Behind it stand four clean cut American boys, collectively known as We Are The Arm.

"Do you often dream of being beach-ridden with a boombox blasting 80's synth-funk by your side?

Well then your dreams have just become an auditory reality.

Dig a hole in the sand -- throw in some Black Moth Super Rainbow , Billy Ocean, Ratatat and George Benson and you'll have a concoction nearing the fresh new jamz from WE ARE THE ARM.

Full-length "Togetherness" drops Cinco De Mayo '09 on Achord Recordings -- in exclusively vinyl and digital form". - WATA

PSYCHO KILLER QU'EST-CE QUE C'EST?

Photobucket

I recently rediscovered this classic Talking Heads track through the Greg Wilson Essential mix I posted a a few posts back. It´s from 1977 and the album that bore the obvious title of Talking Heads: 77.

MP3 Talking Heads - Psychokiller (Alt. Link)

The Greg Wilson edit ads a long intro and some crowd cheers that will probably get a reaction on the dancefloor.

MP3 Talking Heads - Psychokiller (GW Edit) (Alt. Link)

NOTE: It seems now that the GW edit above is using a live version of the track. So the only new thing to this track is the length of the intro.

GET INTO THE GROOVE

madonna

Now, I´m no Sonic Youth fan, but any band that makes punk flavored covers of Madonna songs are all right with me. Ciccone Youth was a Sonic Youth side project in the late 80´s that spawned two albums, the first was all Madonna covers, and the second, The Whitey Album was covers of other 80´s hits like "Addicted to Love" (Robert Palmer).

The best song however was this one:

PINK PROJECT

Photobucket

Italy, 1982,a local dj and producer Luciano Ninzatti realizes during his sets that Pink Floyd´s "Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)" and Alan Parsons Project´s "Mammagamma" has the same tempo and key in some places. He teamed up with composer/keyboardist/producer Stefano Pulga and made what can only be described as a mash -up. The vocals from Pink Floyd´s song fitted perfectly on the Parsons piece, so Pulga and Ninzatti decided to officially release the mix as Disco Project. However, the final recording was not a mix, in that it did not feature any actual samples from the Parsons or Floyd records; instead, everything (i.e. the whole instrumentation) was very carefully re-played by Pulga, Ninzatti and Bonsanto - in particular, Ninzatti played a nice rendition of David Gilmour's famous guitar solo - while the choir was performed by a group of schoolkids from an international school in Rimini. All of this was mainly done because Pink Project had no authorization at all from the any of the songwriters - indeed, they never asked for any - so the only way for them to release "Disco Project" was to actually make cover versions of the three pieces featured in it. The choir also followed the key shift in the music of "Mammagamma", which was not present in the original mix by Pulga & Ninzatti.

"Disco Project" was a major hit in Italy during the summer of 1982, and this implicitly obliged Pulga & Co. to put up a fictional band for TV performances. Indeed they did - the song was mimed various times on Italian TV by four people (on bass, guitar, drums and keyboards) dressed up in black monk-like robes and black pointed hoods. Although there were rumors at the time about three of the mysterious individuals being actually Pulga, Ninzatti and Bonsanto themselves (with the fourth "member" being Massimo Noè), this was never really confirmed or denied by anyone. Also, the TV performances did not feature any choir or anyone lip-synching the lyrics, although the vocals were clearly heard.

FEEL FREE

Photobucket

The Dog´s favorite house/ hip-hop/ electro/ r&b/ minimal producer Remi alias Stanley Steel just sent over this deep house gem. It features what sounds like Norway´s answer to a female Common called Poppie on vocals. It sounds kind of like something Masters At Work could have done back in ´93. Easy on the ears it´s the perfect soundtrack to a gloomy Tuesday night.

MARINA

It´s nice to hear some swedish pop that´s not from Sweden, and if it wasn´t for the heavy british accent that´s exactly what I would assume Marina & The Diamonds was; Sweet, innocent girl pop from Stockholm or Lund. However, she´s from Wales and has turned out some beautiful, catchy and harmonic tracks that puts her in the running with the Lykke Lis and Robyns of the world. Check her out on Neon Gold Records.

WHEN I GROW UP

Photobucket

Now, I love The Knife as much as the next guy or gal, but this new song from Fever Ray just sounds like Neverland to me (which was incidentally my favorite track of the "Silent Shout" album). What turned me on to The Knife was their ability to reinvent themselves from album to album and do something new. "When I Grow Up" is nothing new under the sun, it feels a little unimaginative. But it´s not bad by any means.

Frida (Anni-Frid Lyngstad) is the brunette from disco supergroup ABBA. She had a solo stint in the 80´s with the most relevant part of that catalogue being this Phil Collins produced pop number from ´82. It´s a big reverb drum attack with a great guitar rhythm on top.

They were advertising a new mix they had done, the profile picture was a flyer for a party with my fellow countryman Todd Terje. So I clicked it and on their page was posed a whole lot of edits they had done of classic pop and disco tunes. I liked their stuff so I befriended them and I will now share a few of my favorite edits of theirs.

MARCH OF THE ZAPOTEC

Photobucket

Just as I´m "re-discovering" the greatness of Beirut, I found out that the 23 year old wunderkind just released another album with the snappy title "March of the Zapotec and Real People Holland - New Recordings from the State of Oaxaca". I´m thrilled of course to hear these new Gypsy-ish renderings from the Paris based New Mexican native, and Gypsy-ish is what I get, but I get something more as well. It seems Zach Condon has another had an affair with a synthesizer while the accordion sits at home with the kids.

The best and most accurate comparison I can make when it comes to the synth tracks on this album is to swedish electropopper Familjen, and listening to "No Dice" it feels like the Skonska vocals are just around the corner. Instead we get a great melody and headnoddingfoottapping beat.

Zach stays with wifey though for most of the album, and his "affair" with the Synth becomes more of a fling than something serious.

The Dog has been lucky enough to get a great British duo who go by the name of Rough Drawings to do a wonderful mix just for us.

‘We hope you enjoy this one. Blood, sweat and tears went into it. There's a few favourites in there, new and old. Let us know what you think too, we like feedback. As for our own project, we’re close with a couple of tracks, we feel positive, but we’re not giving up our day jobs. 1´S & 2´S

Photobucket

Cage & Aviary (aka Neil & Jamie) are a british duo of selectors and producers. As this mix they did (along with an interview) for Anthem Magazine suggests their selecting skills a top notch and as their myspace suggests, so is their production (and editing) skills. Their only releases up until now are three super limited vinyl releases (100 per release) of great (in the widest sense) disco music.

On the very "now" question on disco musics comeback Jamie said:

"I got into disco in the mid-90s, after getting very bored and disheartened with house music. I never realized how much house owed to disco―when I bought Ride On Time by Black Box at the age of 17 I didn't have a clue that it sampled some black disco diva called Loleatta Holloway. Years later I discovered these roots of house, and that was a really amazing ride. So, it's never really gone away has it?

Oh, and girls."

NEW NU RAVE

Photobucket

Nu Rave is sooo 2006, but apparently word hasn´t reached Oz yet. First there was Gameboy/ Gamegirl, now there´s S.Y.L.K. Now S.Y.L.K. has the noisy irritating nu rave blog tracks that we all know and are sick-ass tired of, but they also has breaths of fresh breezy air like "Hot Flush". It´s essentially hip-hop with an 80´s edge and naive rhymes, very reminiscent of the fantastic, yet underrated girl duo Avenue D.

MP3 S.Y.L.K. - Hot Flush (Alt. Link)

Another lesser track is featured on the Girl Powder compilation.

BORKO

Photobucket

Iceland is can´t compare with Sweden maybe when it comes to pop talent, but they sure try. It´s a tiny country and pop-wise the music that comes out of there is maybe more of the alternative kind like Björk and Sigur Ros (with the exception of Steed Lord). Borko is more Björk than Steed Lord, but it seems more substantial in a way (I personally can´t stand Björk), so finally there is a great addition to this "genre" that can also speak to people like me who fringe at the sound of a voice that sounds like a cat being ass fucked (pardon the French).

DISCO BLOODBATH

Photobucket

New mix up on Resident Advisor, by a UK gang I never heard of before called Disco Bloodbath. I´m digging on the mix, so I´ll be sure to keep my eyes open for them in the future.

It´s a nice mixture of italo-ish dance tracks. In their own words:

"We decided to do a mix that was musically representative of our party. We wanted to evoke the peaks, troughs and drama of a night at Disco Bloodbath where we get to play the play records we love irrespective of genre. It was also important to us that we recorded it live using predominantly vinyl. Hopefully after you listen to it you'll feel a bit cosmic - and forgive the occasional wonky transition." - DB

ART

Photobucket

Art is an English psych-rock band that did their thing in the late 60´s. Led by front man Greg Ridley they changed the bands name from The VIPs in ´67 and released one album in their short lived career under the
Art name. Another name change came when a keyboardist by the name of Gary Wright joined the bands line up. They were now called Spookey Tooth, but Greg Ridley went on to join Humble Pie and Spookey Tooth split in 1974, but have since hooked back up and are touring again.

The tracks here are from the 1967 album Supernatual Fairy Tales.

Italians really do do it better. Case in point suprelabel Italian´s Do It Better´s latest signing Bottin. He´s an actual Italian person:

"Bottin is from Venice Italy and has been flying under
the radar for a while. Our aim is to bring him into the
limelight where he belongs. He is not only a stellar producer,
but an excellent dj with an even more excellent record collection." - IDIB

And to celebrate his first 12" release on IDIB he has made a well constructed mix of old and new disco.

FLAGRANT FOWL EP

Photobucket

Cousin Cole just sent over a couple of remixes from his and partner in crime Pocketknife´s latest EP.

"Pocketknife & I decided to send out low bitrate mp3s of the songs on our new EP (record of the week at Picadilly Records by the way). The version of "Love Lockdown" here is a little different from the EP version, mainly just shorter for home listening."

Now I can´t really stand "Love Lockdown" myself, but it´s tolerable when it´s gone through Mr. Cole´s capable remix machine.

NO WAVE

Photobucket

Another mix from the always fabulous Optimo (Espacio). This time a collection of tracks from the mystic "No Wave" genre.

"So, what is No Wave? Now there's a question! Ask any fan of No Wave what it is and I bet they'll give you a different answer. They'll also tell you who is and who isn't No Wave and no two lists of bands will be the same. Personally, I don't think there is a right or wrong answer or a definitive list of bands. My definition of it probably encompasses a broader spectrum of bands than most other people's. I'd argue that early Swans and Einsturzende Neubauten could be called No Wave but if you try and tell me ESG are No Wave I'd have to throw you in the Clyde. It's all very confusing!

The name came about as reaction to the term New Wave. At the tail end of the 70's the record industry was trying to rebrand punk and labeled the poppier bands that came in the aftermath of Punk as New Wave. The No Wave bands wanted to reject this poppier side but they also felt no affinity to Punk. At the time, Lydia Lunch (the queen of No Wave?) bemoaned how Punk was just sped up Chuck Berry riffs and it is true that if you listen to most (but not all!) punk today, it is just badly played, sped up three chord rock n' roll. The Garage bands of the 60's had nailed the Punk sound way earlier and frankly mainly sound better to this day. Go listen to 'Never Mind The Bollocks'. Most of it sounds leaden and apart from Rotten's vocals doesn't really sound threatening or revolutionary in the slightest. Listen to No Wave today and it is still a shock to the system and often sounds like a music with no precedent. This last thing is another of the keys to what No Wave is. Many of the artists were determined that their music should not be influenced by anything that came before and should sound totally new. If influences did creep in they were more likely to be from free jazz than any rock based form of music. The 'No' in No Wave could thus be taken to imply the music didn't belong to any particular style or genre.

The ability to play was completely unimportant too. But where Punk liberated thousands of non musicians who found they could make music by only learning a few chords, many of the No Wave artists didn't even bother learning one chord. Coaxing atonal and abrasive sounds from their instruments and conjuring up basic repetitive rhythms was a much more effective way for them to express themselves. Melody? Forget it! Although when one hears No Wave, it is instantly obvious that that is what is being listened to, none of the bands really have that much in common stylistically.

In 1978, Brian Eno was living in New York and was blown away by the performances he was seeing by these artists. He wanted to capture this and document it so he took four of the bands - Mars, The Contortions, DNA and Teenage Jesus and The Jerks into the studio and produced (in the loosest possible sense) four tracks apiece by each of them. This came out as the legendary 'No New York' album. The one problem with this album is all the bands that got left off, which has resulted in many people thinking these four bands are thee definition of No Wave when there were numerous other acts ploughing similar (different) territory. The Theoretical Girls must have been particularly gutted as they were initially meant to be on it and were then dropped at the last minute.

No Wave critics often argue that it was all a load of art wank and while many of the artists involved did come from an art / performance background, most didn't. But, as well as music, there were also No Wave film makers, the most famous of them being Nick Zedd, John Lurie and Richard Kern. In May of 2005 we were showing a Richard Kern film on the tv screens at Optimo. The film upset someone who was attending the club so much that they complained to the police. This resulted in the slightly surreal scenario of Jonnie and Mike, one of the Sub Club's owners, having to sit in a room in Maryhill police station while a WPC and a police Sergeant watched the film to decide if it was pornographic or not. They decided it wasn't but suggested we refrain from showing it again.

No Wave was a huge inspiration when the ideas about what Optimo would be were being formed and the early soundtrack to the club featured a lot of this music. I guess this has diminished over the years, mainly because, well, it's not always the most danceable of musics, but you are still likely to hear many No Wave gems in the first hour of the club. Indeed, every song on this mix had been played at the club.

For me this music was truly revolutionary and I get as much as a buzz out of listening to it today as I did when I first encountered it 20 odd years ago. I still regularly check eBay to see if any No Wave gems I have missed crop up (I'll snag that 'Not Bite' 7" by Red Transistor one day!) and can't imagine a day when I'll stop listening to it. There was a bit of a resurgence of interest in No Wave a few years ago and then last year I was talking with some hipster about my love of No Wave and he replied 'You still listen to that? It's so 2001'. That reply is a masterclass in why hipsters are idiots.

I hope some of you enjoy this 'mix'. It is not an easy ride and definitely not for all. No Wave is a sound you'll either love or hate. I can't imagine anyone thinking it's ok. 'Ok' is never enough. Music that solicits extreme reactions is mainly lacking in our present day culture. Perhaps that's reason no. 347 why I love No Wave?" - JD Twitch

WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Photobucket

Sweden keeps popping out pop acts like none other. Among these is Anna Ternheim who has a voice and sound much Sweden´s previous sweetheart Lykke Li. The reason for this might lie in the producer being the same as Ms. Li, namely Björn Yttling. So nothing new under the sun, but very good none the less.

JULIET

Photobucket

I wasn´t aware of the skinny guy in the falsetto group theBee Gees had a solo career until today. Robin Gibb is his name, and he released three solo albums in the 80´s, the first of which I enjoyed the most. The album "How Old Are You" featured a hit single called "Juliet", which I had heard before, but was not aware was the work of a former "Gee". It´s a great 80´s pop track, and I thank arawa for turning me on to it.
